Membership Matters Weekly Letter from the President: A Week of New Leadership, Major Investments and Forward Momentum for Mobile

Last Updated: November 13, 2025By

Dear Mobile Chamber Members,

This week marked a new chapter for Mobile, one that builds on the strong foundation laid over the past 12 years.

A new mayor with a clear vision

On Monday, we officially welcomed Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis into office. He didn’t waste any time getting to work. By Tuesday evening, he was already meeting with our Board of Advisors and Board of Directors to share his priorities for Mobile.

I feel encouraged by what I heard. He talked about maintaining the fiscal responsibility established under Mayor Stimpson, keeping public safety front and center and continuing to invest in the projects that make Mobile a great place to live.

He also spoke passionately about connecting our waterfront to the people, making Water Street more walkable and creating spaces where families and visitors can gather and enjoy the beauty of our city. He’s committed to growing attainable housing, supporting our public schools and finishing the quality-of-life projects already underway from the Mobile Arena to Brookley by the Bay.

It’s clear he’s ready to lead with energy, vision and a deep love for this community.

Major expansion at the Port of Mobile

Big news from the Alabama Port Authority and APM Terminals Mobile. The two have announced plans for a new 1,300-foot berth at the container terminal. This $131 million investment will expand berth capacity by 50%, allowing three ultra-large container vessels to dock at once.

That’s incredible progress and another sign that Mobile’s port is leading the way on the Gulf Coast. With the channel deepened to 50 feet and the rail expansion underway, this next phase positions us as one of America’s most competitive and efficient gateways for trade.

When construction wraps up, the terminal will handle up to 1.4 million TEUs a year with seven ship-to-shore cranes.

Planning for resilience pays off

We were also proud to host the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Chamber Foundation and Allstate this week for a Disaster Resilience Forum at The Battle House. The conversation hit home.

Their research shows that In Mobile, every $1 invested in resilience and preparedness reduces economic costs by more than $14 compared to a scenario with decreased investment.

That’s a powerful return and a reminder that preparation isn’t just smart policy, it’s smart economics.

As weather events become more frequent and more costly, it’s vital that we plan ahead. I’m proud that Mobile has already developed a City-Wide Resilience Plan to guide that work and keep our economy strong no matter what comes our way.

You can find the full report from the U.S. Chamber here. I encourage you to take a look.

It’s been a busy week filled with milestones, planning and promise. Thank you for everything you do to keep Mobile’s momentum going strong.

Until next week,
