Membership Matters Weekly Letter from the President: 2026 Economic Outlook

Last Updated: December 4, 2025By

Dear Mobile Chamber Members,

I want to thank everyone who joined us for our 11th Annual State of the Economy event, presented by Hargrove Engineers & Constructors. It was an energizing morning that brought together business leaders from across our region to examine the economic trends shaping Mobile’s future.

We were privileged to hear from Tom Wickham, Vice President and Managing Director of Government Affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, who provided valuable insights on the national macroeconomy, federal policy developments, tariffs and the latest spending bill.

Tom’s perspective on how these national shifts in federal policy impact our regional business climate was both timely and instructive. The U.S. Chamber’s commitment to achieving 3 percent annual economic growth represents an ambitious but achievable goal that would create tremendous opportunities for the next generation of Alabamians.

The unveiling of our 2026 Mobile Area Economic Outlook Survey revealed strong momentum as we head into the new year. The 5.14% GDP growth from 2022 to 2023 demonstrates the solid economic foundation we’ve built together. I am particularly encouraged that local companies are reporting a positive business outlook for 2026 following a successful 2025.

Why it Matters: Our survey also highlighted important challenges that require our continued attention, particularly the barriers to entry for our local labor force including affordable housing, childcare and transportation. As David Rodgers, our Vice President of Economic Development, noted, our focus in 2026 will be on continuing to develop talent and education, recruiting new industries and advancing the infrastructure needed to support continued economic expansion.

It was our distinct pleasure to recognize two exceptional companies whose leadership and performance are driving meaningful progress in our region. MYER Companies, our Manufacturer of the Year, exemplifies operational excellence and sustained growth. Since its founding in 2013, this family-owned metal fabrication leader has grown to employ more than 200 team members while continuously investing in workforce development and community partnership. Their current expansion, which will add 36,000 square feet of manufacturing space along with 50 to 60 full-time positions. demonstrates the kind of commitment that strengthens Mobile’s industrial backbone.

We also celebrated 68 Ventures as our Innovator of the Year. This Daphne-based development and investment company has deployed more than $1 billion in capital since 2016 and distinguished itself through a people-first approach that actively partners with entrepreneurs. Their commitment to community impact, from donating millions in land and resources to supporting families through various initiatives, sets a powerful example of business leadership that extends beyond the bottom line.

As we look toward 2026, I am confident about the trajectory of our regional economy. The data, insights and conversations from Wednesday’s event all point to continued growth and opportunity.

Speaking of regional growth and investment, I want to congratulate the City of Saraland on the opening of the first phase of The Land Sports & Recreation Complex. This impressive $72 million, 100-acre project represents a significant investment in our region’s quality of life and economic vitality.

The newly opened 78,000-square-foot indoor complex features four basketball courts, eight volleyball courts, 12 indoor pickleball courts, two multipurpose rooms, an indoor walking track and locker room facilities. The facility also houses The Fitness Den, a full-service fitness center offering monthly and annual memberships.

The bottom line: This type of amenity strengthens our region’s ability to attract and retain talent while enhancing the quality of life for residents across the Mobile area. We commend Saraland Mayor Joe McDonald and the City of Saraland for their vision and commitment to this transformative project.

Until next week,
