Membership Matters: Runoff Election, Business Expansion and Port Leadership

Last Updated: September 4, 2025By
Dear Mobile Chamber Members,

This week’s municipal elections set the stage for the next chapter in Mobile’s leadership. Congratulations to all the newly elected and returning members of the Mobile City Council. We look forward to working with them in the coming term.

In the mayoral race, no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, triggering a runoff between the top two finishers — former Mobile County District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis and State Rep. Barbara Drummond. The runoff election will take place on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and will determine Mobile’s next mayor.

To help inform voters, the Chamber asked the candidates to respond to a series of questions on the issues most important to the business community. Their full, unedited responses are available in our Election Guide.

While the Chamber does not endorse candidates, we are committed to providing resources that keep our members and the broader community informed. I encourage you to vote on September 23 — your participation is vital to shaping the future of Mobile.

Master Boat Builders Expands Operations in Mobile County

On Monday, Master Boat Builders, Inc. announced a $7.8 million investment to modernize and expand its shipbuilding operations in Mobile County. The project includes a new fabrication shop and floating drydock, creating 85 new jobs and adding to Master Boat’s skilled workforce of more than 300.

Mobile’s maritime industry continues to thrive, and Master Boat’s investment underscores our region’s leadership in shipbuilding. By creating new jobs, retaining existing ones and investing in workforce development, this project is a powerful example of how our business community is growing alongside our thriving port and maritime economy.

With more than four decades of experience and deep local roots, Master Boat Builders continues to be a shining example of how businesses in our community can grow, innovate and compete on the global stage while providing good-paying jobs here at home.

The Chamber is proud to support investments like this that drive long-term success for our workforce and our economy.

Mayor Announces Next Step in Improving Public Transit

On Wednesday, Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s administration announced the selection of Via Transportation to operate Mobile’s transit service.

The Mobile Chamber is already familiar with Via, having partnered with the company last year to launch MoGo Rideshare — a pilot program designed to expand access to jobs and training opportunities across our city. That experience gives us confidence that Via brings the vision, expertise and proven track record needed to strengthen Mobile’s transit system.

MoGo Rideshare will continue through August 2026, during which time Via will conduct studies and engage with the community to design a new system that reflects the needs of Mobile residents.

The Mobile City Council will now consider approval of this selection at its meeting next week.

Alabama Port Authority Director and CEO John Driscoll retires

Alabama Port Authority Director and CEO John Driscoll announced his retirement earlier this week. Doug Otto, the port’s chief engineering officer, was named interim director, and the search for a new permanent director will begin immediately.

Under John’s leadership, the Port has continued to strengthen its position as one of our region’s most vital economic engines. John’s guidance has helped drive growth, expand global trade opportunities and ensure the Port remains a cornerstone of Alabama’s economy.

We are grateful for his dedication to advancing Mobile’s reputation as a hub for commerce, shipbuilding and international trade.

Until next week,
