USA Health expands family medicine practice with addition of Meier
MOBILE, Ala. – Amanda Meier, D.O., USA Health’s newest family medicine provider, was a third-year medical student at the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. When clinical rotations and in-person classes were put on hold as a result, she still found a way to answer the call to serve.
That call came from the Kentucky Department for Public Health asking for medical students to help relieve the strain placed on healthcare professionals already serving on the front lines.
Meier, one of the first four students who helped launch Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s COVID-19 relief program, spent eight days at River’s Bend Retirement Community, caring for residents who tested positive for the virus. Eventually, 700 medical and nursing students would offer to volunteer their time to fill in coverage gaps during the early days of the pandemic.
Her future in family medicine came into shape during her clinical rotations, when she experienced the daily variety and lasting impact her work could have.
“I chose family medicine because I love being able to take care of the patient in different stages of life and the continuity of care primary care provides,” she said.
Meier earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and psychology from the University of Louisville. She graduated from the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine, then completed a residency in family medicine at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where she was born.
“I have a special interest in women’s health and hope to integrate this into my practice,” she said. For women, she’ll offer breast and cervical cancer screenings, treatment of menopausal symptoms and recommendations on contraceptive options.
As an osteopathic doctor, Meier treats the whole person using the techniques and tools of conventional medicine along with a proactive approach. In addition to women’s health services, she will provide treatment for allergies, cold and flu, anxiety, depression, diabetes, hypertension, urinary tract infections and more.
She is accepting new patients at Family Practice Associates/USA Health located at 2270 Hillcrest Road in Mobile. To schedule an appointment, call 251-666-2213.
