Play ball! Season opener at Miracle League of West Mobile: Schmidt Family Park
The local Buddy Ball League held the first official baseball game at the Miracle League of West Mobile: Schmidt Family Park on March 10. This historic event was a chance for children with disabilities to play an exciting game with the help of local high school baseball and softball players, who assisted them as they rounded the bases and took up their positions on defense.
The Miracle League of West Mobile: Schmidt Family Park officially opened in October with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a celebratory jamboree game. This baseball field, the first of its kind in Mobile County, was made possible through a partnership among the Schmidt Family, Mobile County Public Schools, Mobile County Commission, South Alabama Pecan, South Alabama Utilities, and many other community supporters who stepped up to the plate to make this dream a reality.
A special check presentation took place just before the first pitch, with Barry Dean of the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association announcing a $10,000 donation to the park. With 62 participants on this season’s Buddy Ball roster, games will be played through May, featuring four teams: the Giants, A’s, Colorado Rockies, and Detroit Tigers. The field features a synthetic rubberized surface to accommodate wheelchairs and other assistive devices, with double-wide base paths for extra maneuverability. Adjacent to the field, an inclusive playground offers accessible swings, slides, fitness equipment, wheelchair ramps, and even a zip line, ensuring fun for all.
Additional donations are needed to support the ongoing operation and maintenance of the park, as well as to expand it with additional fields. For more information or to support the Miracle League of West Mobile, follow the park’s Facebook page, or visit mcpss.com/miracleleague.
