Mobile, Ala. – Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has announced $7.5 million in grant allocations that will support two City of Mobile projects aimed at enhancing Mobilians’ access to the water.

The Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GoMESA) allocates a portion of offshore oil and gas revenues to Gulf Coast states and communities for coastal conservation, restoration, and public access projects. The latest round of GoMESA allocations includes two City of Mobile projects that will create easier access to Mobile Bay and support development on the downtown riverfront.

A $3.5 million allocation will support the construction of a new access road to Brookley by the Bay, a 90-acre waterfront park located on the western shore of Mobile Bay that is currently in the design phase. With additional funds provided by the City and other partners, this $10.5 million investment will provide vehicular access to the park and lay the groundwork for future phases of the project. It will also support future industrial development projects at the adjacent Brookley Aeroplex.

An additional $4 million GoMESA allocation will help strengthen Mobile’s waterfront infrastructure and support the City’s efforts to activate its downtown riverfront. This funding will help relocate storm drains and other infrastructure, extend the bulkhead at Cooper Riverside Park to the north, and build a boardwalk that connects several city properties along the downtown waterfront. These improvements will enhance connectivity, support development, and make the downtown riverfront more resilient.

“On behalf of the citizens of Mobile, I want to thank Governor Kay Ivey and Conservation Commissioner Chris Blankenship for their continued support of our community,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. “These investments will help connect Mobilians to some of our most incredible natural resources, while also supporting long-term growth and development downtown and at Brookley.”

This distribution of GoMESA funds is overseen by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) as well as the Governor’s Office. The City of Mobile has been fortunate to receive several GoMESA grants to support significant projects, including a combined $14 million to support the redevelopment of the downtown riverfront and the bulkhead at Cooper Riverside Park.
