Mobile native completing internship with MCHD
MOBILE, Ala. — The Department of Data Analytics and Epidemiology with the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is proud to support its newest public health intern, Makayla Pettway, who is completing her Applied Practice Experience for the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program at Walden University.
By engaging in real-world public health work here at MCHD, Ms. Pettway will be able to apply advanced knowledge and skills in a meaningful practice setting while contributing to projects that support data-driven decision-making, community health improvement, and population-level impact.
“As public health leaders, we have a responsibility not only to serve our communities today, but also to help prepare the professionals who will lead this work in the future,” said Dr. Tommie Walker IV, Director of Data Analytics and Epidemiology. “Providing meaningful applied learning experiences allows interns like Makayla to strengthen their skills while contributing to work that has lasting value for our department and the community we serve.”
Ms. Pettway said she is a proud native of Mobile. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Biology, as well as her Master of Science in Community Psychology, from Florida A&M University.
“I am currently pursuing my Doctor of Public Health degree to further expand my knowledge and impact in the field,” she said. “I chose to complete my internship with the Mobile County Health Department to gain hands-on experience and deepen my understanding of public health issues affecting my local community.
“This opportunity allows me to strengthen my skills in community engagement, prevention, and health promotion while preparing for a future career as a public health professional dedicated to improving health outcomes and reducing health disparities in underserved populations.”
