MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. — Behind every cone and caution sign is a person at work, prompting Mobile County officials to urge drivers to slow down and stay alert as part of National Work Zone Awareness Week.

The Mobile County Commission is joining state and national partners in recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 20–24), reinforcing this year’s message: Safe Actions Save Lives.

“Across Mobile County, our crews are working every day to maintain and improve the roads upon which our community relies,” said Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson. “We’re asking drivers to take extra care in work zones. Slow down, stay focused, and move through safely. Those small actions can make a big difference.”

While Alabama has seen a decline in work zone fatalities in recent years, crashes remain a concern. In 2025, more than 2,500 work zone crashes were reported statewide, resulting in 11 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. Most of those impacted are drivers and passengers.

In Mobile County, the Commission maintains approximately 1,400 miles of roads and about 160 bridges. Ongoing projects ranging from routine resurfacing to major infrastructure improvements funded through Pay-As-You-Go funding and federal partnerships often require temporary lane closures, shifting traffic patterns, and reduced speeds.

During Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, and all year long, drivers are encouraged to:

• Slow down and follow posted speed limits
• Stay alert and avoid distractions
• Watch for workers and changing traffic patterns
• Maintain a safe distance and merge carefully

Motorists should also be aware that fines for speeding and other moving violations are typically higher in active work zones.

“Roadwork reflects continued investment in Mobile County’s future,” Hudson added. “When drivers stay patient and attentive, they help protect the people doing the work and everyone traveling our roads.”
