Mobile County GDP Grows More Than $2 Billion Since 2022, Outpacing State and National Averages

MOBILE, Ala. – Newly released federal data shows Mobile County’s economy continued its strong upward trajectory in 2024, with local real-GDP growth totaling approximately $2.046 billion between 2022 and 2024, representing a 9.2% increase over its 2022 level.

The delayed 2024 GDP figures, released following last fall’s government shutdown, show Mobile County’s economy grew by $949 million in 2024 alone, bringing total real-GDP to $24.3 billion. That represents a 4.06% growth rate for the year, well above both state and national averages.

“This level of sustained growth over a two-year period shows the strength and resilience of Mobile County’s economy,” said Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne. “Growing our real-GDP by more than $2 billion since 2022 is a testament to the momentum we’ve built across multiple industries. That’s remarkable.”

Mobile County accounted for approximately 13% of Alabama’s total economic growth in 2024, ranking second statewide behind only Madison County, which contributed 14.4% of the state’s growth. Mobile County’s growth rate exceeded several of Alabama’s largest economic centers, including Jefferson County at 1.39%, Montgomery County at 2.68%, Tuscaloosa County at 1.39% and Baldwin County at 2.83%. Among major counties, Mobile County recorded the highest growth rate in 2024.

For comparison, Alabama’s overall economy grew 2.95% in 2024, reaching $255.6 billion, while the national economy grew 2.79% to $23.36 trillion.

“This data confirms what we’re seeing on the ground,” Byrne said. “Mobile County is not just growing, it’s outperforming our peers across the state and exceeding state and national trends. That kind of growth reflects the hard work of our business community, elected leaders and the strength of our diverse economic base.”

“These numbers tell a bigger story than a single year of success,” said Mobile County Commission President Merceria Ludgood. “They reflect sustained County investment and strong collaboration with public and private partners, resulting in broad-based, resilient growth that is reaching communities across Mobile County and laying the groundwork for long-term economic stability for everyone.”

To support continued economic momentum, Mobile is also investing in critical infrastructure. The Mobile Airport Authority recently announced it will receive $3 million in federal funding for tarmac improvements at Mobile International Airport. The funding, secured by U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, was included in the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill.

“Strong and sustained GDP growth doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of strategic investment, a skilled workforce, and strong partnerships in the business community and at every level of government. Today, Mobile is not just growing locally — we’re emerging as a national competitor for economic development and opportunities across a broad base of industries. As we continue to invest in infrastructure and workforce development, we’re laying the groundwork for long-term economic success that will benefit Mobile and everyone who calls it home,” said Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis.

With sustained economic growth and continued infrastructure investment, Mobile County is strengthening its foundation for long-term success across business, tourism and manufacturing sectors along the Gulf Coast.
