Mobile Art Council to host Sculpting Tradition: A Float Prop Workshop
Mobile, AL – The Mobile Arts Council is proud to announce an exclusive professional development opportunity for art educators sponsored by our partners Amp Up Arts, Alabama Folklife, Mobile Carnival Museum, and National Coatings & Supplies: a hands-on Mardi Gras Float Prop Workshop led by master float builder Steve Mussell and a team of expert artisans. With more than 100 years of combined experience in float construction, prop making, and Mardi Gras artistry, the instructors will provide participants with a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the creative process that powers one of Mobile’s most beloved traditions.
This immersive workshop is designed specifically for art educators, offering:
- Hands-on instruction from four professional float artists
- A complete curriculum to implement in classrooms
- A ready-to-paint MoonPie prop sculpture to take home
- Lunch provided in a collaborative learning environment
“This workshop is more than professional development—it’s a way to connect educators and students to Mobile’s cultural heritage,” said Steve. “By equipping teachers with these skills, we are helping ensure that Mardi Gras artistry continues to thrive for generations to come.”
Registration is limited to just 20 participants. Educators are encouraged to secure their spot early for this one-of-a-kind opportunity to bring the artistry and tradition of Mardi Gras directly into their classrooms. Join us at the Mobile Arts Council Gallery @ Room 1927 on October 18, 2025 from 8:00am-1:00pm and take home not only experience but knowledge to share.
