Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile is inviting residents, business owners, community members and downtown stakeholders to a Community Meeting on the upcoming St. Louis Street “Complete Streets” project before bids are opened next month.

The project will include a redesign and rebuild of 17 blocks of St. Louis Street, adding new and improved drainage features, curb and gutter, sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, landscaping and a newly designed street to help slow vehicle traffic. The rebuild also includes a partnership with the Mobile Water Works and Sewer System to add new water lines and make sewer repairs underneath the street’s surface, and will move above ground utility poles off the sidewalk.

“Complete Streets” projects help improve safety and usability for cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles, making travel on the corridor safer for everyone. As a burgeoning area for retail, residential and commercial development, St. Louis Street has become a popular section of downtown Mobile. This latest project will amplify the revitalization the private sectors has already begun.

City officials and project leaders have had meetings with all impacted property owners, businesses and resident groups along the St. Louis Street corridor to inform them about the project’s scope, timeline and benefits. The public meeting on June 4 will extent the same opportunity to other members of the community.

Those in attendance can view various displays about the upcoming project, including renderings of the finished product, construction schedules and more. Those interested in learning more about the project are encouraged to attend the meeting on June 4 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Innovation Portal at 358 St. Louis Street. Stakeholders with questions or concerns can email stlouisstreet@cityofmobile.org.
