City of Mobile to celebrate Hank Aaron, Ozzie Smith at Hall of Fame Walk
Mobile, Ala. —The City of Mobile is inviting Mobilians to help celebrate National Baseball Hall of Fame members and Mobile natives Hank Aaron and Ozzie Smith during an official dedication of their statues at the Hall of Fame Walk at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 31.
Mayor Sandy Stimpson will join legendary St. Louis Cardinal Ozzie Smith and the family of late Braves legend Hank Aaron to commemorate the athletes’ inclusion in the newly constructed Hall of Fame Walk at the Mobile Convention Center. The site features six 9-foot-tall bronze statues of Mobile natives who are members of the Hall of Fame for their respective professional sports.
The larger-than-life bronze statues of “Hammerin’ Hank” and the “Wizard of Oz” are featured next to the likenesses of National Baseball Hall of Fame members Billy Williams, Satchel Paige, and Willie McCovey, and Professional Football Hall of Fame member Robert Brazile. They are the eye-catching centerpiece of a major renovation of the plaza outside the Convention Center in downtown Mobile.
The City of Mobile held an official ribbon-cutting for the Hall of Fame Walk in June, but Ozzie Smith and Billye Aaron, widow of Hank Aaron, were unable to attend. Thursday’s event will feature Ozzie and Mrs. Aaron along with several of their friends and family members. Other local professional athletes, elected officials, and players from local baseball leagues will also be in attendance.
Members of the public are invited for the dedication of the Hank Aaron and Ozzie Smith statues.
