The humble oyster may seem unremarkable, but they are extraordinary. They improve our water quality and provide protection and resources for people and animals. Without them, our bay and community wouldn’t thrive. Alabama has lost nearly all of its natural oyster reefs, but there is good work being done to bring them back.

On Saturday, July 12, from 4-8 p.m., Braided River (420 St. Louis Street) and Mobile Baykeeper (mobilebaykeeper.org) are throwing an oyster fest at the brewery to honor the bivalve. OYSTERS ON TAP will celebrate the best oysters on the Gulf Coast with the people who raise them, the people who protect them and the people who love them.

The event will feature:

-The release of Gulf Pils, a new, one-of-a-kind pilsner made with Alabama oyster shells

-Fresh oysters from five local oyster farmers: Bama Bay Oyster Farm, Isle Dauphine Oyster Company, Admiral Shellfish Company, Holy Ground Oysters and New Reef Oyster Company

-Live music from steel drummer Mitch Rencher (starting at 5 p.m.)

Braided River’s new Gulf Pils is a unique style of pilsner that is super refreshing with a briny bite for a Gulf Coast finish. Alabama oyster shells were used in the boil to add a slight salinity and a complex minerality. The spicy, citrusy aromas combine with a smooth mouthfeel to create the ideal companion for enjoying the Gulf Coast. A portion of all purchases will help fund oyster reef restoration in Alabama.
