MMofA to open exhibition by internationally celebrated artist Juan Logan
MOBILE, Ala. – On May 9, 2025, Mobile Museum of Art (MMofA) will open a new special exhibition by internationally celebrated artist Juan Logan titled Without Stopping, which features an epic commissioned painting of the same name. The 6 by 16 ½ foot composition, which will enter the Museum’s permanent collection, is Logan’s response to his learning about the people and histories of Africatown.
“Juan Logan’s work is both brilliant in terms of technical achievement and thought-provoking due to the questions it asks us to consider,” MMofA Executive Director Jon Carfagno says. “We are very grateful that the Mobile County Commission’s support has fueled our ability to collaborate with him, as well as our friends at the History Museum of Mobile and Africatown Heritage House.”
An artist currently residing in North Carolina, Logan’s works can be found in prominent private, corporate, and museum collections including the Smithsonian, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art among many others. Logan received his M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and his awards include fellowships from the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the North Carolina Arts Council, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper, the Carolina Postdoctoral Scholars Fellowship, and the Phillip Morris Companies.
The exhibition will feature selections from his far-reaching Elegies series. Traversing the “intricacies of memory,” this body of work includes more than 200 compositions that explore Elegies’ pivotal contemporary themes, including the intersection of identity, race, place, and social mobility. The narratives within Logan’s Elegies describe inherited memories, the pursuit of freedom, and the complexities of time. Logan says, “Each painting serves as a contemplative space where the echoes of the past coalesce with the present, creating a nuanced exploration of memory’s emotional landscape.”
This exhibition will be presented in collaboration with Clotilda: The Exhibition at the Africatown Heritage House, a site of the History Museum of Mobile. On view at the Africatown Heritage House will be Threads, a smaller-format original composition that was made for the collaboration and was inspired by the process of creating Without Stopping. On April 3, 2025, Threads will debut with a special event at the Heritage House.
“The History Museum of Mobile is ecstatic to partner with the Mobile Museum of Art to encourage people to learn and experience how Africatown inspires not only the local community, but also those from all parts of the United States and the world,” History Museum of Mobile Director Jon Sexton says. “Juan Logan’s Elegies are a captivating opportunity for the public to experience the inspiration that others feel through art.”
“Juan Logan’s artwork is a wonderful example of how the Africatown story can continue through an artistic lens,” Africatown Heritage House Manager Jessica Fairley says. “The theme for the exhibition Without Stopping speaks directly to the audience simultaneously as a call to action and a bold statement of triumph.”
The partnership will also include a full slate of programs and events that will inspire connection in the community, as well as a new publication featuring essays by Dr. Tiffany Barber and Dr. Kern Jackson.
Without Stopping is generously funded by the Mobile County Commission. The accompanying publication is funded by The Mary J. Larkins Charitable Foundation, and programs and collaborations associated with the exhibition are funded by The Crampton Trust. All other Museum exhibitions and programs are supported by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the City of Mobile.
Without Stopping will be on view at Mobile Museum of Art from May 9, 2025, through February 14, 2026. For more information about this exhibition, visit MobileMuseumofArt.com/Without-Stopping.
