MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Airport Authority (MAA), in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), gathered with airport employees, first responders, students and members of the community Friday morning at Mobile Regional Airport to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The ceremony began with an invocation led by Mobile Airport Authority Board Member Abe Harper, followed by the Presentation of Colors by the Baker High School JROTC Color Guard.

Mobile’s Singing Children performed the National Anthem a cappella.

At 7:46 a.m. Central Time, those gathered observed a moment of silence marking the exact time American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center 25 years ago.

During remarks, TSA Transportation Security Manager Tracy Mize reflected on the responsibility carried forward by those who protect the nation’s transportation system today. “Today, we remember those who served, those we lost, and the role each of us plays in protecting our country. We reaffirm our promise to the American people: not on our watch,” Mize said. “We have learned from the courage and sacrifice of those who came before us, and we carry that spirit and vision from yesterday, to today, to tomorrow and into the future.”

The ceremony also recognized current and retired firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel and other first responders in attendance, honoring the courage of those who ran toward danger on September 11 and those who continue to serve their communities today.

Representatives from MAA and TSA participated in a ceremonial wreath placement in memory of the 2,977 people who lost their lives in the attacks.

“The way we travel has changed. The way we protect our airports and aircraft has changed. But the purpose behind that work remains very human: taking care of the people who place their trust in us every day,” said Adam Hays, Acting Executive Director of the Mobile Airport Authority. “Twenty-five years later, we remember those we lost. We honor those who served. And we carry forward the courage, compassion and unity that emerged during one of our nation’s darkest days.”

The Mobile Airport Authority thanks TSA, Baker High School JROTC, Mobile’s Singing Children, participating first responders and all who joined the Authority in remembering and honoring the lives forever changed by September 11.
