MOBILE, Ala. – SSAB, a leading Nordic and U.S.-based steel company, is set to enhance its Mobile operations with a $12 million capital investment aimed at increasing production capacity and efficiency.

“Growing SSAB here in Alabama is a priority for our company. SSAB Special Steels’ strategic objective is to increase QT capacity, and Mobile plays a significant role in achieving this,” said Andy Bramstedt, general manager of SSAB Alabama. “We appreciate the Mobile Chamber and the Mobile County Industrial Development Authority for recognizing that significant capital being invested in existing industries is an invaluable part of economic development, and our company is pleased to be a part of the community’s growth.”

The investment will enable SSAB Alabama to extend the existing furnace and upgrade shot blasting equipment to increase the facility’s quenching and tempering (QT) capacity by 30,000 metric tons—an increase of approximately 10 percent over the current capacity.

“SSAB’s continued investment in our community underscores the importance of supporting both new and existing industries in Mobile County. Retaining 649 jobs and enhancing production capacity is not only a win for SSAB but also for the economic vitality of our region,” said Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne.

“SSAB’s $12 million investment in enhancing its Mobile operations is a testament to the strength and potential of our local economy. By expanding their production capacity and reinforcing their commitment to our community, SSAB not only enhances its own operations but also contributes significantly to our regional growth and job retention. We are excited to see SSAB’s continued success and grateful for their ongoing partnership with Mobile County,” said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood.

Operations for the expansion are expected to begin by the fourth quarter of 2025.
