Hometown: Mobile, Alabama
Tell us about Port City Floats and what your business offers.
Port City Floats is Mobile’s first public float barn, offering a unique space for float rental, storage, and custom float building. Whether you’re a Mardi Gras krewe, a business, or an individual looking to participate in a parade, we provide the tools, expertise, and space needed to bring your vision to life.
What inspired you to start Port City Floats?
We saw a need in Mobile’s Mardi Gras community for a dedicated space that catered to krewes of all sizes. Our goal was to make the float-building process more accessible and collaborative while honoring the creativity and tradition of Mardi Gras.
How does family and community play into what you do day to day?
Family and community are at the heart of everything we do. Mardi Gras is deeply rooted in bringing people together, and we embrace that spirit every day. Whether it’s working alongside krewes, partnering with local artists, or creating a welcoming space for families to participate in the magic of Mardi Gras, fostering connection is our priority.
What is the process of creating a custom float, from concept to completion?
The process begins with a brainstorming session where we learn about the client’s vision, theme, and specific needs. From there, we create a design concept and blueprint, followed by construction and decoration. Each float is a true collaboration, and we work closely with clients every step of the way to ensure their ideas come to life.
What role do you see your company playing in the growth and evolution of Mardi Gras celebrations in Mobile?
As Mobile’s Mardi Gras continues to grow, we aim to be a resource and hub for creativity. By supporting both established krewes and newcomers, we hope to encourage more participation and innovation in our city’s celebrations, while preserving the rich traditions that make Mobile the birthplace of Mardi Gras.
Do you have a favorite float or design theme that you’ve worked on?
It’s hard to choose just one! However, we take great pride in designs that showcase Mobile’s culture and history, from floats inspired by our local landmarks to ones that celebrate the unique stories of our krewes. Each project brings something special to the table. Currently, the Mabien’s Voyage is our favorite as it’s showing the beginning of something wonderful.
If you could describe Port City Floats in three words, what would they be?
It would be the 3 C’s. Creative. Collaborative. Community-focused.
If there is one thing you wish more people knew about your business, what would it be?
We’re more than just a float barn—we’re a place where creativity thrives and connections are built. Whether you’re a seasoned krewe or brand-new to Mardi Gras, we’re here to help you celebrate in style.
