ArcelorMittal’s Anticipated World Class Steel Facility Projected to Create 250 Jobs in Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – ArcelorMittal Calvert, wholly owned by ArcelorMittal, is in the planning stages for an advanced manufacturing facility in Calvert, Alabama that could deliver 150,000 metric tons (Mt) of domestic production capacity of non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NOES) annually.

NOES is a crucial component in electric motors used in battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. The current domestic capacity for high-end NOES is insufficient to meet the anticipated growth of electric vehicles, making this project helpful in satisfying a crucial market need.

The planned investment is estimated to create approximately 250 jobs and is projected to have a capital investment exceeding $1.1 billion. The site under consideration in Alabama is adjacent to the AM/NS facility.

Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are excited to see the steel industry continue to grow in Mobile County and we’re looking forward to working with ArcelorMittal on this project.”

In support of this clean energy project, ArcelorMittal Calvert has been awarded $280.5 million in investment tax credits from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as part of the Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Credit (48C) program.
