Alabama is an open primary state. Voters do not register by political party and may choose either the Republican or Democratic primary ballot when they vote in the special primary election.

What to Know Before the 2026 Primary Election

The Special Primary Runoff Election is scheduled for August 11, 2026. Voters will select party nominees for congressional districts 1 and 2.

The General Election is scheduled for November 3, 2026.

Polling Hours: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day

Voters are encouraged to verify their voter registration status, polling location and district prior to Election Day as locations or districts may change.

Sample Ballots

Congressional District 1 voters will have four candidates on the August 11 Republican primary ballot: Lucas Burger, Jerry Carl, John Mills and Austin Sidwell.

Only one Democrat, Clyde Jones, qualified for the race. As the sole Democratic candidate, he will not appear on the special primary ballot and will advance to the general election.

  • August 4: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail
  • August 6: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
  • August 10: Last day to hand-deliver absentee ballot
  • August 11: Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon

General Election — November 3, 2026

  • October 19: Voter registration deadline
  • October 27: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail
  • October 29: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
  • November 2: Last day to hand-deliver an absentee ballot
  • November 3: Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon

Voters who plan to vote absentee should be aware of application and submission deadlines for each election. Deadlines vary depending on whether the ballot is requested by mail or in person.
