Hembree Heating and Air Named a Mobile Chamber Small Business of the Year Finalist
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Chamber has named Hembree Heating and Air a 2025 Small Business of the Year finalist, recognizing the company’s long-standing commitment to integrity, community service and excellence in the HVAC industry.
Founded in 1969 by Walter Donald Hembree Sr., the business began as a small, family-run operation with Walter handling service calls and his wife answering phones from their home. When Walter suffered a debilitating back injury, his son, Don, purchased the company at only 17 years old. Driven to improve safety and efficiency in the industry, Don expanded the business tenfold before the age of 27.
Today, Hembree Heating and Air is under the leadership of Don’s son, Josh, who initially pursued a career in law before returning home to continue the family legacy. While practicing law in Montgomery, Josh learned that Don was considering retirement and selling the company. Feeling a deep pull to preserve what his family had built, Josh transitioned into the business, combining his legal and business skills with a passion for serving the community. Under his leadership, the company has grown sixfold over the past five years.
The company offers a full range of HVAC services, including installation, maintenance and indoor air quality solutions, while maintaining a strong “people first” culture. Leaders credit this philosophy with creating a family atmosphere within the business, which translates into stronger customer relationships and better service for the Mobile Bay region.
“Hembree Heating and Air’s primary responsibility is to serve our community, families and create life-long relationships by providing the best solutions to our customers’ HVAC needs,” said General Manager Josh Hembree. “We invest in our people, and always put people above profit. We strive daily to be known as the employer of choice in our industry by constantly growing a culture founded on collaboration, empowerment and accountability that fundamentally believes in going above and beyond whatever we are doing and making our community a better place.”
In 2024, Hembree Heating and Air donated more than $100,000 in free or discounted HVAC systems, ductwork and repairs to local families and organizations in need. The company also sponsors numerous youth sports teams, schools, churches and community groups. Many contributions are made quietly and without publicity, in line with the company’s belief that “to whom much is given, much is required.”
Hembree’s values are summed up in its “We Believe” statements, which guide every aspect of operations. These principles include supporting families, giving back generously, standing behind their work, using the best technology, providing clear communication and offering outstanding customer service.
“We have always believed in doing the right thing, putting our people, customers and community above profit,” Hembree said. “That commitment has shaped our business for three generations, and we are honored to be recognized by the Mobile Chamber as a Small Business of the Year finalist.”
