Mobile Museum of Art to host Holiday Market & Open House
MOBILE, Ala. – On Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 2 to 5 pm, Mobile Museum of Art will host their annual Holiday Market & Open House featuring an artisan market, live music, food trucks, art activities, and free admission to the Museum.
“This event will be fun for all ages,” said Executive Director Jon Carfagno. “Where else can you experience world-class exhibitions, make your own work of art, visit a Fantastical Forest, and finish your holiday shopping in one location?”
Vendors will be offering a variety of handmade items, such as jewelry, pottery, self-care products, and more. Dennis Gould will provide live music, and tasty treats will be available from Frank & Lola’s, frios, Los Rollin Bros, and LuLu’s Shaved Ice.
During the Open House, the whole family can gather in our Education Wing to make holiday ornaments to take home, and Muffinjaw Designs will be on-site for visitors to watch live glassblowing.
The Museum will also have galleries full of masterworks by renowned artists in special exhibitions, including:
- 1960s Hard Edge and Op Art: Tribute to the Responsive Eye, a blockbuster exhibition that recreates the Museum of Modern Art’s (NYC) pioneering show The Responsive Eye, which coincided with the founding of MMofA in 1964. This exhibition features works from optical art (abbreviated as op art) and hard-edge movements and artists such as Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Gene Davis, Julian Stanczak, and Frank Stella.
- The newly-renovated and family-favorite installation,Fantastical Forest. This interactive installation explores the intersection where nature and art meet. It was designed by local artist Lucy Gafford with the help of Ben Kaiser and Vanessa Quintana.
- Surrealism: From the Collections of MoMA & MMofA, showcasing seven masterworks by artists like Yves Tanguy and Kay Sage, on loan from The Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership.
- (Un)Settled: The Landscape in American Art, a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Andrew Wyeth, Jeffrey Gibson, and more, presented by the American South Consortium through the Art Bridges Cohort Program.
Admission to the Museum will be free all day in addition to the afternoon activities.
The Museum’s exhibitions and programs are supported by the City of Mobile, Mobile County, The Alabama State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
