Community Foundation of South Alabama Surpasses $100 Million in Assets
MOBILE, Ala. – The Community Foundation of South Alabama has reached an extraordinary milestone, surpassing $100 million in assets under management, a key indicator of the foundation’s growth and the community’s unwavering support. Board Chairman Marshall Shields announced the news during a recent event, highlighting the significance of this achievement for the future of charitable giving in the region.
“The Foundation has never been in better shape,” said Shields. “Reaching over $100 million in assets under management is a huge milestone almost 50 years in the making.”
Of the Foundation’s assets, over 70% are endowed, meaning the funds are invested in perpetuity to support charitable causes for generations to come. A portion of each fund is made available annually for grantmaking, while the remainder is reinvested to ensure continued growth and lasting impact. This model ensures that resources will always be available to address the evolving needs of the community.
Shields noted the foundation has had a banner year in new assets and distribution and pointed to the staff and board members for their hard work.
“This is not a finish line or destination. Today is a starting line and we have this incredible platform built through years of hard work going back to very humble beginnings,” said Shields. “We have a lot to look forward to.”
In addition to this financial milestone, the event also honored the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama Caring Foundation with the naming of the Community Foundation’s rooftop terrace.
Representatives from Blue Cross and Blue Shield were present to celebrate the recognition of their long-standing support, which has played a crucial role in the Foundation’s success.
Tim King, Manager of the Caring Foundation, along with other Blue Cross representatives, unveiled the plaque on the terrace, which has become a key feature of the Foundation’s building. The space is designed to host community-focused events, including an upcoming wellness series.
The Community Foundation’s new building, designed by Walcott Adams Verneuille and opened in 2021, has rapidly become a hub for organizations across the Southeastern United States.
By the end of the year, the Foundation will have hosted over 100 meetings from 60 different organizations, including those in education, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, government, and charitable sectors.
