Mobile, Ala. — The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) is proud to announce Ian K. Westerfield as the Firefighter of the Month for August 2024. Firefighter Westerfield joined the fire department in 2022, where he quickly demonstrated his commitment to excellence and his eagerness to learn. He currently serves as a firefighter on Engine 3.

In June, while off-duty and dining with his family, Firefighter Westerfield’s training kicked in when his stepfather went into cardiac arrest. He was able to set aside emotions and focus on providing lifesaving care as 911 was called. He provided high-quality CPR until Rescue 26 and Engine 11 arrived and assumed care and were able to get a pulse back, transporting their patient to the hospital.

Firefighter Westerfield’s ability to remain calm under pressure and apply his training effectively showcases his professionalism and dedication to serving his community. His actions that day exemplify the highest standards of professionalism.

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) is also proud to announce Fire Service Driver Robert J. “Bobby” Ching as the Firefighter of the Month for September 2024. Driver Ching joined the fire department in 2015 and currently serves as a driver on Engine 12.

As hurricane Milton roared toward the west coast of Florida last week, Ching set out on his third deployment since August as part of Alabama Task Force 1 (AL-TF1). He worked tirelessly behind the scenes loading equipment and then drove one of the 18-wheelers to the scene before assimilating into his role on the rescue team.

His supervisor, Captain Matthew Lindsey, said that Ching’s passion for being a firefighter and his leadership have been instrumental to their crew’s success. “Bobby epitomizes what we want our firefighters to be,” he said.

Driver Ching is also a hazmat technician and a rescue technician and has been awarded the Physical Fitness ribbon.
