MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. – Mobile County Engineer Bryan Kegley is retiring, effective June 1, 2024.

To facilitate his transition to retirement, on May 9 the Mobile County Commission appointed Assistant County Engineer Kimberly N. Sanderson to serve as Interim County Engineer.

Kegley was granted authority to carry out the duties of the County Engineer in October 2016 and appointed Mobile County Engineer in April 2018, In that role, he has fulfilled all legal responsibilities according to Alabama law, and overseen the administration of infrastructure programs, personnel, and budget management, as well as the planning, design, and construction of Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) and some Capital Improvement Programs.

During his tenure, Kegley has been instrumental in improving Mobile County roadways, particularly through the flagship transportation improvement program, Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG), which has directed almost $1 billion to Mobile County’s roads and bridges since 1977. PAYG was the first of its kind in the state and Mobile County voters have approved it each of the 19 times it has appeared on a ballot. Kegley participated in or led each of the biannual PAYG efforts since 2010.

Kegley has worked for Mobile County Commission for 29 years in increasingly responsible positions: 5 years as a Design Engineer, 10 years as Design Engineering Manager, 7 years as Assistant County Engineer, and 7 years as County Engineer.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of South Alabama and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Alabama and Mississippi. He’s also an Alabama-licensed Professional Land Surveyor.  In total, he has more than 41 years of experience as a civil engineer and professional land surveyor.

Before joining Mobile County, Kegley worked for Brown & Root, USA on hydroelectric construction projects, and he designed roads, bridges, stormwater drainage, and utility projects for Speakes & Associates Consulting Engineers Inc.

Throughout his career, Kegley has maintained engagement with the Alabama Society of Civil Engineers, the Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors, the Association of County Commissions of Alabama, and the Alabama County Engineers Association.
